My motto when choosing foods to eat is
“God-made over man-made.”

As a society, we need to get back to what God has provided for us, not what man has conjured up in a factory lab. The biggest piece of advice I can offer is to educate yourself! Find credible resources (NO, Wikipedia doesn’t count) on food and food additives. Overall, however, we must get back to the basics.

Here is a list of what that can look like:

*This list is modified from a list I discovered years ago online. I do not know its originator, but I have added to it and altered it to what’s presented today.

Read labels!

If what you are eating has a label attached to it, pay close attention to the ingredients.

AVOID ANYTHING THAT SAYS GENETICALLY ENGINEERED OR GENETICALLY MODIFIED!!!!

Ingredients to avoid:

*These are just a few, not an exhaustive list

Artificial Dyes (of any sort—red, blue, yellow)
Caramel Color (or anything that says “color added” with no specification)
Ammonium sulfate
Propylene glycol
Titanium dioxide
Shellac
Nitrates or Nitrites
Brominated Vegetable Oil
Canola/Seed Oils
Silicon dioxide
BHA or BHT
Partially Hydrogenated Oil
Castoreum
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
Carmine
Lanolin (gum base)
TBHQ
Artificial Sweeteners (Sucralose [Splenda], Aspartame, etc.)
Fumaric Acid
Enriched, Bleached, Bromated Flour
Carrageenan
High Fructose Corn Syrup
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
GMOs1
Natural Flavors
Gums (Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum…)
Anything listed with “Sugar” (refined, white sugar)

1Genetically Modified Organisms—mainly in corn, soy, sugar beets, and other plant- based products. More info here

Keep in mind-

Mainly, try to buy organic, whole foods (organic foods are Non-GMO products). BUT BEWARE!—Although some products claim to be organic, gluten-free, or healthy and natural, you still must check ingredients—there’s a lot of greenwashing (products which use misleading “health” terms but are not healthy at all) out there!!!
Again, and this can never be stressed enough, educate yourself by doing research from credible sources on the ingredients listed here and others. If in doubt, throw it out [of your daily routine]! Remember to eat God-provided foods over man-made foods—basically, anything natural and organic from the earth that doesn’t incorporate chemicals created in a lab.

*An added note: Going organic is pricey; I know from personal experience. But do what you can to gradually make those changes (making small changes with one thing at a time). Think of it this way, organic products are so expensive because people are buying more convenient, prepackaged, junk foods, therefore, few companies produce organic products, thus, there is not much supply. However, if we begin buying more of the organic products available, letting companies know that we want more (voting with our dollars spent), companies will create more [supply], thus helping the prices to eventually drop. Also, think about your health: Pay the extra dollar to buy the all-natural, organic breakfast pastries, or buy the box of popular, name-brand toaster pastries (full of colors and all the bad ingredients listed above) that are possibly going to give you health problems, such as cancer, later on.
